Luck is a funny thing.
Sometimes it seems that fortune just shines upon some people, while others can never seem to catch a break.
I happen to be a believer that to a large degree you make your own luck. I subscribe to the theory that “luck favors the prepared mind”.
While there may be several factors and events beyond our control, most people would be astonished at the level of influence they could, and should, have over their own lives, and specifically, their health.
People sometimes say to me, “You’re so lucky, you never seem to get sick!” As if it’s all just a roll of the dice.
You know what I tell those people?…”Luck has nothing to do with it. I set myself up to be healthy, not sick.”
Creating and maintaining a healthy, vibrant life is actually pretty simple, but it does take the discipline to make positive choices on a daily basis.
In my experience in practice, I have found that people aren’t living up to their potential due to one of three reasons:
1. They think it’s too hard.
2. They don’t know where to begin.
3. They give up too soon.
Let’s address each of these concerns.
As for it being too hard to maintain a healthy life…
Does creating a life of health and vibrancy take work, discipline, and the commitment to change? Absolutely! Nothing worth having in life comes easy.
But if you chunk down your goals and work at reshaping your life little by little, you would be astonished at how easy it can be to rehab your ailing body. The key is to be consistent with your habits, stay patient, and keep your end goal in mind. Even one lost pound or the initial inkling of a new contour on your body can be all the motivation it takes to spur you on and build your momentum. And you know what Newton said about momentum. The hard part is getting something moving. Once it’s moving, it’s pretty easy to keep it going. Or something along those lines.
Don’t Know Where to Begin?…
The good news is that with the advent of the internet, we have unlimited health and wellness information at the tips of our fingers. The bad news is that with the advent of the internet, we have unlimited health and wellness information at the tips of our fingers.
In a world of information overload, it becomes too easy to throw our hands up in exasperation and declare that things are just too complicated to sift through. We become so overwhelmed that we go into shut-down mode and don’t change a thing about ourselves.
My advice is to put down the mouse and slowly step away from the computer. All that sitting is bad for you anyway.
You know all that fringe research that is published online every day? Just forget it. Here’s how to stay healthy in a nutshell:
Get adequate rest every night. Wake every day with a positive attitude. Get adjusted. Do some form of exercise on a daily basis. Eat a diet consisting of real food made up of lean protein, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, and healthy fats. Develop healthy relationships. Get outside. Avoid toxins as much as possible, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
Simple, right? Forget all the peripheral chatter, stick to the basic principles of health, and get busy creating the life you deserve.
Don’t Give Up…
What separates history’s greatest heroes from everyone else is that most people give up just when they are on the verge of greatness.
Do you really think you can lose 20 lbs. overnight? Can we repair decades of lumbar instability and tissue damage with 1 week of adjustments?
If you are doing all the right things required to create a healthy life, you just need to continue doing them long enough to see the results. And they will come. (Remember the positive attitude you woke with?) Continue with your exercise, keep up your adjustment schedule, maintain a positive attitude even in the face of adversity. Doing things the right way is always worth it in the end.
Little by little you will begin to see a “new you” emerge. One that doesn’t settle. One that is driven to accomplish more. One that doesnt’ back down from anything. One that is an inspiration to others.
Others won’t believe how lucky you are!
